Trex Decking – What’s New for 2021

Trex Decking- The Original Composite

There are a number of excellent composite decking products on the market, including Trex, TimberTech (who now owns AZEK), and Fiberon, and they all vary slightly in their color and grain pattern, as well as having other unique features. At The Decking Superstore, we’re often asked which one is best and what the main differences between these brands are. In this and our next two newsletters, we’ll take a closer look at the most popular choices in composite decking.

Trex is the original pioneer of composite decking, and they launched the first composite board in the market in 1996. Their original deck product was a single-color board manufactured from wood fiber and plastic and capped with a durable polymer coating. Trex boards have undergone significant upgrades and technological improvements since the 90’s, and they introduced a new-generation, high-performance decking line in 2010 that was more stain and scratch resistant. Today, the company offers four product lines at different price points, but are all protected by a 25-year limited residential fade and stain warranty.

At the top of their product offerings is Trex Transcend® decking. The Transcend line is engineered with a super durable shell technology that protects the product from fading, staining, scratching, mold and mildew. The boards are available in a range of colors and finishes, including five earth tones and five tropical tones. This is the line that most closely resembles real wood, and is offered as a solid board profile.

At a slightly lower price point is the Trex Enhance Naturals deck line. This line has the same authentic wood grain look of the Transcend line, but comes with a scalloped underside that uses less material and thus saves on cost.

Trex Enhance Naturals Scalloped Underside

The mid-level offering is the Trex Select Earth Tones line, which is available in five colors, offers excellent fade and stain protection as well as mold and mildew resistance. While the Select line doesn’t have the rich, exotic look of Trex’s high-end line, the pairing of price and low maintenance make it an excellent choice. Trex Select Earth Tones is also only offered in a solid board profile (similar to Transcend).

If budget is a key factor, the Trex Enhance Basics line offers excellent value. A smart alternative to pressure treated wood, Enhance Basics comes in three traditional colors, is extremely long-lasting, and because the boards are scalloped, they’re lightweight for easy handling.

Regardless of which line you choose, all Trex products are of excellent quality, are exceptionally good looking, and require minimal maintenance. The company also manufactures excellent railing and fastening systems to go with their decking lines. Over the last 25 years, Trex has rightly earned a reputation for longevity, and their products can withstand the most severe weather conditions and the usual wear and tear that may damage other decking materials.
