ABOUT KEBONY®

Kebony is a highly durable, sustainable wood with the aesthetics and performance of the most sought after tropical hardwoods.

Kebony® is the best solution for exterior applications requiring durability and low maintenance.  Kebony is produced from sustainably-sourced timber which is then modified with a bio-based, non-toxic liquid. The resulting product features permanent bonding inside the wood fibers, making it stable, hard, and durable. While the bending strength is relatively unchanged from the parent wood, the stiffness is improved by 10-20% and the hardenss is improved by 30-50%.

Kebony Decking is the right choice if you are looking for the character and beauty of real wood with enhanced attributes that make it last for a long time.  This superior quality enhanced wood is also extremely cost-effective with low life-cycle costs.

Kebony Benefits & Fast Facts

What Are The Benefits Of Kebony Furfurylated Deck Boards?

Durability

Kebony's furfurylation process produces products that are resistance to decay, have increased stability, and contain controlled moisture content. Because of these features, Kebony offers a 30-year warranty on Kebony products. The modification process also makes it very resistant to warping, cupping and splintering

Low Maintenance

Kebony deck boards weather to a silver patina and do not require maintenance other than normal cleaning with soap and water or light pressure washing.

Rot Resistance

The modification process uses a bio-based liquid that increases the resistance of Kebony to rot, decay, fungi and other wood ruining micro-organisms.

Easy Installation

Kebony provide options, with their unique four-in-one decking profile. This saves you time and offers versatility when installing.

Earth-Friendly

Frequently Asked Questions About Kebony Decking

Kebony General Questions

Kebony decking is a premium, sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods and traditional treated wood. Developed in Norway, Kebony uses a patented, eco-friendly process that modifies sustainably sourced softwoods (like Scots Pine or Radiata Pine) with a bio-based liquid. This alters the wood’s cell structure, giving it the durability, hardness, and premium appearance of top tier hardwoods like Ipe, but with a significantly lower carbon footprint.

Kebony decking is exceptionally durable and comes with a 30 year warranty against rot and decay in above-ground applications. Thanks to its enhanced cellular structure, it resists moisture, fungi, and harsh weather conditions, giving it a lifespan that rivals or exceeds traditional tropical hardwoods.

No, Kebony is virtually maintenance free. Unlike traditional wood decks, it does not require regular sanding, staining, or sealing.

  • Routine Cleaning: Just an occasional sweep and wash with water and a mild soap to remove dirt and debris.

  • Color Change: If left untreated, Kebony will naturally weather from its original deep brown to a beautiful, silver-gray patina over time. This transition is purely aesthetic and does not affect the wood’s durability.

Yes, you can stain or seal Kebony decking if you prefer to retain its original rich brown color rather than letting it turn gray. If you choose to treat it, use a penetrating UV inhibiting oil or sealer designed for hardwoods. For best results, apply the treatment immediately after installation and replicate it as needed based on your local climate.

Yes, Kebony is one of the most eco-friendly decking materials on the market.

  • Sustainably Sourced: It uses FSC®-certified fast-growing softwoods rather than depleting slow-growing tropical rainforests.
  • Non-Toxic: The modification process uses a bio-based liquid derived from agricultural waste (furfuryl alcohol), meaning it contains no harmful chemicals or heavy metals.
  • Safe Disposal: At the end of its life cycle, Kebony can be disposed of or burned just like regular, untreated wood.

While both offer incredible hardness and luxury aesthetics, Kebony holds several advantages over Ipe:

Feature Kebony Decking Ipe Decking
Sustainability High (FSC-certified, bio-based) Low (Sourced from slow-growing rainforests)
Heat Retention Stays cooler underfoot in direct sun Gets very hot underfoot
Stability High resistance to warping and cupping Prone to movement if not dried correctly
Maintenance None required (fades to silver-gray) Requires annual oiling to keep color

Kebony decking does not get as hot as composite decking or dark tropical hardwoods like Ipe. Because it is a natural wood product modified with organic materials, it retains the natural thermal properties of wood, making it much more comfortable for bare feet during peak summer months.

To prevent staining and ensure structural integrity, you must use high-quality stainless steel fasteners (Grade 304 or 316) with Kebony.

  • Hidden Fasteners: Kebony is available in grooved profiles compatible with hidden fastening systems (like Step-Three or FastenMaster) for a clean, screw-free surface.

  • Face Screwing: If face screwing, pre-drilling is highly recommended to ensure clean, split-free penetration.
