Frequently Asked Questions About TimberTech Decking
TimberTech vs. The Competition
TimberTech offers two distinct lines of synthetic decking:
- Advanced PVC (TimberTech Vintage, TimberTech Landmark): Made entirely of high performance polymers (synthetic materials) with up to 60% recycled plastic content. It is lighter weight, exceptionally moisture resistant (great for docks and pools), stays cooler to the touch, and can be heated/bent for curved designs.
- Composite (TimberTech Legacy, TimberTech Reserve, TimberTech Terrain+, TimberTech Prime+): Made from a blend of wood fibers and recycled plastics (up to 85% recycled materials). It features a protective polymer cap on all four sides to lock out moisture.
Trex Decking focuses almost entirely on composite decking material (a blend of recycled wood fibers and plastic). Even their top tier lines like Trex Transcend use a wood plastic composite core wrapped in a protective synthetic cap.
TimberTech Decking offers both capped composites and a premium Advanced PVC line (formerly known as AZEK). Advanced PVC contains zero wood fillers, making it entirely immune to moisture related rot or mold.
Synthetic decks can get notoriously hot in direct sunlight.
- TimberTech (Winner): Their Advanced PVC line stays up to 30°C cooler than traditional composite decking and channels heat away faster. If you have kids, pets, or like walking barefoot, TimberTech’s PVC lines are vastly superior in the summer.
- Trex: Because Trex decking boards contain dense wood fibers wrapped in plastic, they tend to absorb and hold onto heat significantly longer.
TimberTech (Winner): Because the Advanced PVC line contains no wood fibers, it cannot absorb moisture. It is highly slip resistant and is the preferred choice for pool surrounds, docks, and coastal areas.
Trex: Trex caps its boards on three sides (leaving the bottom exposed to breathe), which protects them well against everyday spills and rain. However, because it contains wood fibers, it shouldn’t be submerged or used right at the water’s edge like PVC can.
TimberTech: Known for a more natural, matte finish. Their premium lines feature highly varied grain patterns, wire brushed textures, and multi tonal color blending that closely mimics high end hardwoods like Ipe.
Trex: Tends to have a slightly more uniform, repeating grain pattern with a slightly glossier sheen, though their premium Signature and Transcend lines have made massive leaps in realism.
Installation & Maintenance
No. TimberTech boards must never be installed directly on top of existing deck planks or solid surfaces like concrete. You must rip up old boards and attach TimberTech directly to a code compliant substructure. For concrete surfaces, a “sleeper system” providing a minimum of 1.5 inches of clearance is required to allow proper airflow.
No. TimberTech products are engineered strictly for decking, cladding, and surface applications. They are not load bearing and cannot be used for columns, support posts, joist stringers, or beams.
- General Cleaning: Use a mild soap and water solution or an official product like TimberTech DeckCleaner™.
- Scrubbing: Use a stiff natural fiber brush for Advanced PVC boards, or a medium stiffness nylon brush for Composite boards.
- Pressure Washing: You can use a pressure washer, but keep it on a low setting (under 1,500 PSI) and use a fan tip to avoid etching the surface.
- Tip: Do not clean the deck in direct sunlight, or the cleaner will dry too fast and leave a white residue.
Avoid mats or rugs with rubber or vinyl backings, as they can trap moisture and cause surface discoloration. Only use outdoor rated polypropylene or natural fiber rugs, and move them occasionally.
Warranty Information
Advanced PVC (TimberTech Vintage, TimberTech Landmark collections): Comes with a Limited Lifetime Residential Product Warranty and a 50 Year Fade and Stain Warranty.
Composite (TimberTech Legacy, TimberTech Reserve, TimberTech Terrain+, TimberTech Prime+): Typically comes with a 25 or 30 Year Limited Product Warranty and a 25 or 30 Year Fade and Stain Warranty (depending on the specific collection).
Yes, the residential warranty can be transferred one time. This transfer must happen within the first 5 years from the original purchase date.
Both companies offer excellent warranties, but TimberTech edges out Trex on their premium products.
- Trex: Offers a 25 to 50 year limited residential and fade/stain warranty, depending on the product tier.
- TimberTech: Offers a 25 to 30 year warranty on their composite lines, but a Limited Lifetime Warranty paired with a 50 year fade and stain warranty on their Advanced PVC lines.
